What is mechanical security?

Mechanical security is a security system that detects abnormalities such as intrusions and fires by installed sensor devices in the area you want to guard.

If the sensor detects an anomaly, a notification will be sent to the surveillance center that operates 24 hours a day.

Then, an emergency contact will be made to the customer, and ALSOK’s guards will rush to the site if the area is covered.

There are many different types of sensors, and here are some examples:

・Open/close sensor (magnet switch): A sensor that detects the opening and closing of windows and doors with a magnet

・Glass breakage sensor: A sensor that detects breakage of glass

・Vibration sensor: A sensor that detects destruction of walls and ceilings

・Spatial sensor: A sensor that detects far infrared rays emitted from the human body

・Infrared sensor: A sensor that detects intrusion by blocking infrared rays

・Heat detector: A device that detects fire by temperature rise

These sensors and detectors are installed in offices, factories, etc., and are monitored 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by connecting lines to the surveillance center of ALSOK.

Sensors are getting developed

Many improvements have been made to the various sensors listed above. In the early days, there were vibration sensors that sensed when a window was hit, and spatial sensors that sensed small animals or reacted to the movement of a fax machine.

Since the security response team had to rush to the scene every time the sensor caught any movement, it was hard to manage to follow and control as it usually happened to make false alarms.

Nowadays, sensors are designed to detect only vibrations when glass is broken (different in frequency from other vibrations), and they can also be adjusted in the sensitivity so that they do not detect small, fast-moving animals which cause the false alarms.

Advantages and disadvantages of mechanical security

Advantages and disadvantages of mechanical security

There are advantages and disadvantages to “mechanical security”.

First of all, the advantage is that there is no need to set up security guards, so labor costs can be reduced. Basically, it is cheaper to use mechanical security than to hire security guards. Also, in Vietnam, labor costs are rising every year, and along with that, security fees are steadily rising. In contrast, mechanical security rarely increases every year.

In addition, since it is monitored by machines, the careless mistakes due to human being are less likely to occur. Besides the machines work 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The disadvantage is that it requires an initial investment to install sensors and communication lines when security starts. The initial investment will vary depending on the type of sensors to be installed and the size of the site to be guarded.

From the next time onwards, we will bring up some cases as examples on how to use “machine security” in Vietnam.
