AED (Automated External Defibrillator) battery expiration and disposal method summary.

AED (Automated External Defibrillator) battery expiration and disposal method summary.

An AED is not connected to a power source while operating but a battery is attached and electricity is supplied from there.

The battery is draining every day as it is energized even when on standby mode. Therefore, the AED is ready to be used at any time.

Be sure to check the expiration date of the battery and dispose of the unusable one properly so that you do not run out of it in emergencies.

WHAT IS AED

WHAT IS AED?

AED stands for “Automated External Defibrillator”.

I suppose it’s somehow a formal and specific term, but as the name suggests, AED is “a device that automatically removes fibrillation”.

I would like to give further explanation about “fibrillation” in more details from the next time.

But when the heart has a spasm for some reason, the AED automatically analyzes the condition of the heart and determines whether an electric shock is necessary.

It is an easy-to-use device, and even ordinary citizens (non-medical personnel) without medical knowledge can perform lifesaving activities by following the in-built voice prompts.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time.

Deepening your understanding of AEDs, even a little, might help save one precious life.

What is the self-life of AED  battery?

The self-life of the AED battery varies among the manufacturers, but mostly lasts from 2 to 4 years. Cannot deliver a sock from a low battery level and it is impossible to conduct adequate treatment in situations where a shock is required.

Basically, most AED batteries have a self-life from 2 to 4 years, depending on each manufacturer.

It is a good idea to attach a tag to the AED with the information when the battery expires to replace a new one.

Accident caused by expired battery (case in Japan)

If the battery expires or with a low battery level, it would be impossible for the AED to deliver an electric shock while operating.

In fact, there were even cases where the AED was used with the battery running low, and it was not possible to deliver an electric shock to a patient who needed an electric shock.

In order to prevent such a situation, continuous daily inspection is necessary.
